Privacy
What we collect
Almost nothing. There are no accounts here, nothing to buy, and no advertising. You can read every page on this site without telling us who you are.
Cookies
We don’t set any for readers. That’s also why there’s no cookie banner: those exist to ask permission for tracking, and we don’t do the thing they ask permission for. A banner asking for consent we don’t need would just teach you to click through the ones that matter.
One exception, and it isn’t about you: the editing tool at /studio sets a login cookie for whoever is signed in to publish articles. That is a single administrator account. Reading the site never touches it.
Page counts
We count page views so we know whether any of this is being read. The script that does it sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and builds no profile of you—it records that a page was viewed, not who viewed it. It’s served from this domain rather than a third-party tracking network, so loading a page here doesn’t announce your visit to anyone else.
There is no way for us to see your browsing history, follow you to other sites, or work out which member profiles a particular person looked at. We didn’t build that and we don’t want it.
Server logs
Our host, Vercel, records ordinary web-server logs when it serves you a page, and those include IP addresses. This is how essentially every website on the internet works—a server cannot send you a page without knowing where to send it. We don’t mine those logs, connect them to anything, or keep our own copy.
Fonts and images
The typefaces are downloaded at build time and served from this domain, not fetched from Google Fonts while you read. Your browser makes no request to Google on our behalf.
Images attached to articles are served by our writing system, Sanity, from cdn.sanity.io. Loading an article that has a picture in it therefore makes one request to that host, which sees the same thing any image host sees. Member portraits are served from this domain.
If you email us
Then we have your email address and whatever you wrote, because that is what email is. We use it to reply and to fix whatever you told us about. We don’t add you to a mailing list—there isn’t one—and we don’t pass it on.
What we never do
We don’t sell data, because we don’t have any to sell. There are no advertising trackers, no social media pixels, no session recording, and no fingerprinting. This site takes no money from candidates, parties, political action committees or lobbying firms, and it takes nothing from you either.
Children’s privacy
This is a reference site about public records and is meant for a general audience. We don’t knowingly collect information about anyone, including children, because we don’t collect information about readers at all.
Changes
If what we collect ever changes, this page changes with it and the date below moves. Every claim above describes how the site works right now, not an intention.
